Should You Consider Using Garmin GPS Systems?

This information is aiming to supply you with an overview of Garmin's main automotive GPS products, what their features are and how much they are priced at. Garmin is the industry leader in GPS systems, and i'm also intending to compare these for their main competitors, Magellan and Tom Tom. This will provide the right information to choose the correct Garmin GPS for you in addition to your budget.

Before we begin, Garmin, Tom Tom, and Magellan aren't the sole three GPS manufacturers around. There are a number of others. These three, however, are definitely the big three, representing probably 90% on the GPS sales. Garmin itself sells about 70% within the GPS systems sold.

Do you have to just consider these three manufacturers when buying a GPS system? Of course not! Explore the other companies. Many of them offer good products with competitive prices. Just as a personal note, I just have a tendency to go through the major manufacturers whenever I order something. By doing this I am certain my purchase will be supported the coming year and the next.

Before I speak about Garmin products in particular, let's talk just a bit about GPS receivers in general--especially what their main features are.

Principle attributes of any GPS after-market automotive system include the following:

* Touchscreen display interface with 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional views
* Automatic calculation from the fastest route and the shortest path to your destination
* Database of millions of pre-programmed destinations, or Points of Interest (POI's)
* Pre-loaded with maps of the lower 48 United States

If this sounds like all you need, then you may have this from Garmin for around $150! The Garmin nuvi 200 would be the perfect unit just for you. It can do all of the above plus much more.

Tom Tom and Magellan also show competitive products with this cost structure. The Tom Tom One with the Magellan Maestro 3100 are great introductory GPS receivers. They should do the suggestions above and a lot more, and both cost around $150.

However, if you prefer more, it may not be that expensive to get it!

For yet another $100 to $200, you can acquire a GPS receiver, which does more or less everything:

* Wider 4.3-inch screen
* Saying street names with the spoken directions
* More Maps--Canada, Mexico, Europe
* A host of additional POI's (how about six million?)
* Bluetooth, for hands-free calling
* Real-time traffic and weather (with subscriptions)

The Garmin nuvi 350 can achieve most of this, though it only has the 3.5-inch screen. Right now the nuvi 350 runs about $200. Magellan's 3250 is their direct competitor towards the nuvi 350.
