Circuit Board Cleaning Tips

Did you ever turn up the volume on your ancient stereo only to be greeted by a loud cracking boom coming out of the speakers? If you have experienced this, then it means that your stereo is dirty. Dust has settled on the printed circuit board and is interfering with the performance of the volume knob.

Whether it’s your stereo or your RC car, dirt can impede their performance. It’s just a simple fact that dust and dirt don’t pair well with printed circuit boards. Once this dust makes its when into PCBs overall performance and individual components will undoubtedly begin to suffer. It can even lead to a fire hazard. The most hazardous buildups are frequently from the following:

- Dust
- Grime
- Solder flux
- Paint
- Corrosion

Any of these above intruders will affect your electronic device performance. While it would be impossible to get this dirt and grime to avoid your printed circuit boards, you do have the ability to clean it all out.

Cleaning Methods
Remember Without using these precautions you are setting yourself up for a nasty shock. Secondly, static discharge is always a concern, even after you have turned off and unplugged the equipment. To minimize the risk, keep one hand grounded on an unpainted, metallic part of the chassis of the equipment. Keep it there the whole time to maintain a closed circuit and prevent a static arc discharge. If you would prefer, a grounding strip can be attached to your workbench.

On with the cleaning:

1. You will need to directly access the area of the circuit board you want to clean so you will need to open it up.

2. Compressed air should then be used. Use the supplied hose attachment to concentrate the air in the small areas of the PCB. Using the hose that comes with the can, direct the air to the tiny areas of the PCB which have collected dirt, dust and grime.

3. Then move to a small battery-operated vacuum to clean under and around components.

4. If you still see dust or dirt, you will need a fine, small paintbrush that you can dip in denatured alcohol and then you simply swab it across the circuit board. Watch out for any pooling up of alcohol near the components or holes.

Battery corrosion should be removed using a mixture of baking soda and water. Using a soft toothbrush, take this paste and rub it in. After allowing the paste to site on the corroded area for 20-30 minutes, use a dry cloth to wipe it off.

If you find that your cleaning needs are far more complex than this, you should consult a professional electronics repair shop. You may need a new PCB if the dirt and grime appears to be too heavy. In this case, replacing it will likely be cheaper than having it cleaned professionally.
